Hi everyone,

Recently i bought an evaluation board for controlling Brushless DC motor, the board is "DRV8350H-EVM".

i have programmed the microcontroller to spin a sensored motor of an electric bike, everything was ok, the motor was running with overcurrent cases : when i apply braking torque on the wheel or when i set suddenly the duty cycle to 0 in high speed.

after some hours of tests the board stopped working and a led red fault occurs.

would someone tell me how to clear this fault ?

Thanks for posting on the MD forum!

Do you know if the SHx node was seeing positive or negative voltage transients during braking or sudden stops?

Sorry i did'nt notice the voltage transients on the SHx node..

Further, i found in the datasheet of the DRV8350H that the fault conditions can be reset with An 8 to 40-µs low pulse on the ENABLE GATE pin.

I tried this method but the led red is still switched ON.

Is there any other solution?

Outay,

Have you tried removing the board power for at least 30 seconds?

Is the FAULT LED always on when the power is applied?

Outay,

It's possible that braking the motor or similar has damaged the DRV8350 because braking can cause high voltage transients on the SHx and GH/GL nodes. It's also possible that some other component on the EVM has been damaged as braking can cause the VM voltage to rise beyond the voltage rating of components attached to the VM rail through the High Side FET body diode.

Usually applications requiring braking have protection in place to avoid this overvoltage but the EVM was not designed to handle high braking current.

I would suggest ordering another EVM or trying to replace the DRV IC on your existing EVM.

Your diagnostic is so logic, but i used a limitation in my power sypply on 24V and 2A,

I think this couple of voltage/current cant cause overvoltage which damages the driver or the mosfets, no ?

Outay,

Actually the EVM bulk caps can deliver more than the 2A which your power supply can. It is still possible to damage the board in this way even with a current limit.
