TL431 reference pin voltage

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TL431

I have a question about TL431 reference pin voltage range, the datasheet define the voltage range is about 2.5V, I want to know whether the pin will damage if the voltage too big, for example 10V?  what's the problem will happen if the reference pin voltage isn't 2.5V?

Thanks.

  • Krisda,

The valid voltage range is 0V to 2.5V. For higher voltage, a series resistor must be used to limit current. Absolute maximum current rating is 10mA. I suggest limiting current to 1mA.

    For 10V max input, chose series resistance > (10V-2.5V)/1mA = 7.5k ohms.
