DRV2605: Sharing "REG" pin between multiple devices?

Part Number: DRV2605

I encountered a design with multiple DRV2065 devices sharing a single 1uF capacitor on the internal regulator output pin "REG".
That looked unusual to me, as I would normally put one  1uF per DRV2065 device, and keep each internal REG line separate.
Is that an okay design practice (i.e. saves cost, reduces parts count, etc.), or will it create problems?

thanks,
Tom

  • Hey Tom,

We advise you to use a separate cap for every device. The thing is, that cap is a filter for REG pin, from which the device gets its reference voltage for the regulation. If you connect more devices on the same pin, it could mess up the stability of the device.

However, we haven't tested this feature, so if you want to try it, you are welcome to do so. It could still work, but it has to get tested first.

    Best regards,
    Marko
  • Thanks Marko, as I suspected, it's NOT recommended. (My initial gut feeling, but hey - it might have been intended to operate that way...)
