DRV2605L: Some devices stop working

Hi Kelly:

I've been though an issue with the DRV2605L similar to the DRV2605L: Some devices just don't work.

The initial prototypes were built using Adafruit DRV2605L Haptic Motor Controller with ERM Vibrating Mini Motor Disc and LRA G0832012, then I moved to circuit boards for the second round of prototypes.

Circuit and code match the recommendations of the data-sheet. Capacitor C(VDD) is 1 μF, according to DRV2605L: What is the correct value for C(VDD)? Datasheet gives two different values.

The DRV2605L drivers work fine but suddenly after a while stop working, on some of the initial prototypes and circuit boards, with either the ERM or LRA.

Two cases:

Diagnostic returns the expected value, 0b11100000 = DRV2605L, but the DRV2605L no longer activate the attached ERM or LRA.
The DRV2605L doesn't answer the I²C request.

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated case, as three of the five DRV2605L have stopped working so far. What should I investigate?

No, the ERMs and LRAs work fine with another DRV2650.

Hi Rei,

Are you still able to write to I2C with the failed boards? What is the regulator voltage on REG pin?

I've also switched the ERMs between the DRV2605Ls: all of them work fine with item A2.

Hi Rei,

It is quite strange to see the results of B1 being all 1's. Could this device be damaged? How are you assembling the boards?

In your original post, you mention that Diagnostics returns 0b11100000, but the DRV2605L no longer activates the actuator. Does this mean that there is no vibration during the diagnostic routine, but it indicated passing?

It would be good if we could review your schematic and layout. Do I need to send you an email to share this information?

Item B1 might be damaged, so it no longer answered the I²C requests. But I'm more concerned about items A1 and B2.

Initially, A1 reported 0b11100000; but now its reports 0b11101100.

A1 and A2 and break-out boards made by Adafruit, with the schematics.

B1 and B2 are mounted on DIP-adapters. B1 is already integrated in the final product, but B2 it still on a bread-board with the same schematics as A1 or A2.

An email could ease sending further documents.

I manage to get the A1 back to work by sending the configuration after each power-up.

It seems the default parameters have been over-written on A1.

Alas, this solution doesn't solve items B1 and B2.

On item B3 (final prototype of the product, not previously listed, same issues as B1), I replaced the DRV2605L. The new DRV2605L now answers to I²C commands and drives the LRA successfully.

Now, post Thu, Jun 7 2018 6:38 PM on the DRV2605: diagnostic fail thread suggests to consider the DRV2625 instead of the DRV2605.

Should I replace the DRV2605 for the DRV2625?

Hi Rei,

The DRV2625 is our newest device with more robust algorithms and more advanced diagnostics. I would suggest using this device if it fits in your design. The DRV2605L has a VSSOP package, whereas the DRV2625 only comes in WCSP (or BGA) with 0.4mm pitch. Just make sure the package is compatible with your PCB.

Yes, all of our haptic device should be able to drive that LRA.
