Device for Body Temperature Measurement

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMP112, TMP007, TMP006

Which device would you recommend for surface body temperature measurement (on the skin)? Previous posts have recommended the TMP006, TMP007, TMP112.

What level of accuracy is achievable with correct calibration for each of the above mentioned devices?

Thank you for your help!

  • Hi Nick,

The answer depends on the use case; TMP006 and TMP007 are non-contact sensors (do not need to be in contact with the skin); the TMP112 requires good thermal contact to the skin.

For non-contact applications the recommended device is the TMP007. Please refer to the TMP007 data sheet, SBOS685, Section 8.2.2 for performance expectations on measureing skin temperature. The final accuracy is dependent on the calibration procedure used and on the end equipment design.

For use cases where good thermal contact to the skin is feasible, then the TMP112 will work. The accuracy will be the same as quoted in the data sheet.

  • Werner,

Thank you so much for your quick response. Based on the datasheet and SBOU142, it looks like we can achieve a very high level of precision across a narrow temperature range (e.g. human body temperature) with proper calibration. We will be using the TMP007 for our device.

    Thank you again!

  • Hi Nick,

    Glad to be of assistance.

Watch for the TMP007 Layout and Assembly Guide SBOU143; it will be out soon and gives guidelines on optimizing layout to get the best performance as well as potential problems to be aware of,
