TMP006 question -- how to detect the temperature of polished copper

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMP006

Hello,

TMP006 will be used in our product to measure the temperature of polished copper.

But the Emissivity Values of a polished copper is 0.08 to 0.036, and TMP006 should only be used to calculate the surface temperature of target objects with emissivity values greater than 0.7.

How to handle this issue?

Thanks,

Guanmian

  • Hi Guamnian,

As you state, the emissivity of copper is small so little IR energy will be emitted and accuracy will be poor.

The solution is to increase the emissivity of the copper. Oxidized copper has an emissivity of ~0.8.

Rolled or Roughened copper can have  emissivity in range of 0.65 - 0.75.

Finally, most paints have  higher IR emmisivity in range >0.8, and some paints are specially formulated for this purpose.

  • Hello Werner Metz,

    Thanks for your answer.

Would you like to recommend some paints for this application? The copper may be up to 300'C or higher.

    Best regards

    Guanmian

  • Hi Guanmian,

There are a number of paints and coatings to raise the emissivity. Below is a sampling of coatings and emissivity ranges from a brief search. You will need to consult the manufacturer to verify the suitability of a particular coating at 300C.

If you increase the emissivity then the amount of IR radiation emitted will go up; be sure this does not adversely affect any surrounding objects or the PCB the IR sensor is mounted on. It may be necessary to reposition the IR sensor relative to the copper object, but you will have more signal.

    Regard,

    Werner Metz
