LMZ23608: no load operation

Hi!

We have chosen LMZ23608 module for speeding up our design. Input voltage: 11 ... 21V. Output Voltage: 5V. Max output current: 6A. I think it will all work fine. We have only one concern. Our minimum  output current can be as low as 0 (ZERO) Amps. In this respect I am not sure regarding module  control loop stability,  module heating, module internal componets stress, etc.

Also it is difficult to rely on PSPICE models as they were mathematically prepared for the case when RLoad is not infinity.

Did anyone try to use this module at no-load condition? What is the value of minimal load (if any)?

Any help appreciated!

  • Hello Andrei,

    The LMZ23608 should work fine with no load. I don't foresee any issues.

    Page 10 of the datasheet has line and load regulation curves that start at no load condition.

    Thanks for the quick reply!

    Previously we have tried MIC45212-2 (here is the link to the datasheet ). 

    MIC45212 curves started also at no-load condition. But when we installed it into the board at no load module temperature increased swiftly upto 85C and noizy sound appeared. That is why this time I am very suspicious :)

    Dear Denislav,

    If you have LMZ23608 Evaluation Board at your hands could you please conduct no-load experiment and report module temperature or abnormal behaviour if any? For us this is very important.
