Both the reference designs TIDA-00449 and TIDA-00792 uses CSD19536KTT FETs. However only the TIDA-00792 uses the BQ76200 FET driver.

Can the protection FETs be driven without the BQ76200 FET driver? What are the pros and cons of doing so?

Thanks

  • Hi,

The BQ76200 is needed if your system requires FETs on the high side (vs. low side). The advantage of high-side FETs is allow communication with the battery pack even when the FETs are opened due to a protection fault. This video briefly discusses why you would want to use high-side FETs (at about 4:00): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIBP6UlAyfo

Many applications use low-side FETs. The advantage of this solution is slightly lower power and lower cost. In this case, the BQ76200 is not needed.

    Best regards,
