TPS63030: spike current during Power Save (PS/SYNC) enabled

Part Number: TPS63030

is the periodic spike as shown below expected when Power Save is enabled ? this is like 2mA peak current every 40ms periodically 

However, when I disabled Power Save, there is no spike.

the measurement was done by 10-ohm shunt resistor.

    Is this the input or the output current?

    This behavior is expected. In power-save mode, for average inductor current below 100 mA, the TPS63030 operates in short bursts. The burst frequency depends on the load current. In your case the burst frequency is around 25 Hz, so I assume there is no load. As you increase the load current, the burst frequency will increase up to tens of kHz, before the converter switches to PWM mode.

    For the explanation, please refer to section 8.4.2 of the TPS63802 datasheet, the principle is the same in the TPS63030.

    sorry forget to mention. this is input current of TPS63030, with no load.

    how about when power-save disabled? is it in continuous mode ?

    When power-save is disabled, the converter switches continuously, regardless of the load current. Here, the advantage is lower output ripple, faster response and more accurate output voltage, but the efficiency at light loads is decreased significantly (see Figure 6 vs Figure 7 in the TPS63030 datasheet).

    If you can explain your application, we can suggest how to operate the converter. Typically for battery powered applications, you will use power save mode, to extend the battery life. If low ripple is needed, you can also dynamically switch between the modes. For example, you can power your sensitive sensor in power-save mode to take rough measurements, and when high precision is needed you can temporarily switch to forced-PWM.
