About Buck Application Question

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS54302

Hi Team,

May I know TI Buck converter how to detect CCM transitions DCM?

1. Looks TPS54302 monitor inductor current fall to 500mA can into DCM, since current mode control ?

2. General rule, The threshold of CCM and DCM operation depends on the ripple of inductor current ?

  • Hi John,

Please see the description of Pulse Skip Mode.

When the peak inductor current is lower than 500 mA typically, the device enters pulse skipping mode. When the device is in pulse skipping mode, the error amplifier output voltage is clamped which prevents the high side integrated MOSFET from switching. The peak inductor current must rise above 500 mA and exit pulse skip mode.

During the skip mode, the high side MOSFET is stoppted, the output current could have a chance to drop to zero, which is similar to the behaviour of DCM.

    Ryan.

  • Is output of Error Amplifier clamped to low or high clamp voltage?
In my understanding it should hit the lower clamp voltage for light load operation in order to save input power.
  • Hi,

Thanks for your attention. yes, it would hit the lower clamp voltage for light load operation in order to save input power, thanks.
