TPS54302: About Overcurrent Protection

Part Number: TPS54302

Dear experts, the TPS54302's maximum continuous output current is 3A. When the load current is 3.5A, what will happen? TPS54302 will turn off? If the TPS54302's output is short to GND, what will happen? TPS54302 has short-circuit protection and over current protection function? If this error conditions last for long time, the TPS54302 will be damaged? Or, The TPS54302 will restore to normal state when the error condition is removed? How can I calculate the exact output current that will shutdown the TPS54302? Thanks.

  • Hi Jason,

It depends on that if actual inductor current peak trig the maximum current limit or the junction temp trig OTP point at 3.5A load current. TPS54302 has Hiccup protection mode in case of output overload or short, Hiccup mode can protect circuit without over heated, and recover to noraml operation once output short released.
  • Dear Andy, refer to below SPEC, current limit will occur when the Maximum inductor peak current exceed High side and Low side current limit(5A and 4A)? So, maybe TPS54302 can output more than 3A when the Maximum inductor peak current does not exceed High side and Low side current limit? And TPS54302 will not be damaged when output is shorted to GND for a long time? Thanls.

  • Hi Jason,

you need to design the inductor current ripple Kind with low value, say Kind=0.2, Iout=3.5A, then current peak is 3.85A which is quite close to the minimum value 4A of Max Inductor peak current.

As TPS54302 has hiccup mode OCP protection and low side curretn is also limited, so TPS54302 will not be damaged if output has continuous short.

  • Dear Andy, thanks.
