TLV1117LV: Help identifying the TLV1117LV33DCYR IC, 2 batch perform different...

Part Number: TLV1117LV
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLV1117,

Hello,

I have two batch of boards with TLV1117LV33DCYR reulator, one is labeled TJ-81M41HE and other it's labeled TJ-64RSHNE

The 1st batch works OK and I can have 3V3 with 4V input, the 2nd batch with 4V I got less than 3V in the output.

I have swapped the IC's from one board to the other and I swap the issue also, so it's the regulator that is different, can anyone help me undestand why those 2 IC's that are suppose to work the same do not work?

The same batch works OK and the 2nd batch do not perform OK, the IC is really different...

Can anyone help?

  • Hi Julio,

Just to make sure that I am understanding everything correctly, were both batches of boards the same layout/application?

In order to help debug, could you provide a partial schematic showing the linear regulator and relevant input/output capacitors? Also could you provide a scopeshot showing Vin, Vout, and Iout during startup/shutdown? This will help me see the relationship between the rails. In order to have a comparison, it would be good to see the same waveform for both the "good batch" and "bad batch."

    Ryan
  • Hello,

I've been digging more about this and I found out that the 1st batch has the TLV1117LV and the 2nd batch seams to have TLV1117 (non LV version), cause it performs like the non LV version. I only get 3V3 out if I have 4V7 input, while I have 3V3 in TLV1117 (1st batch) with 3V4 input.

My current it's 80mA in both cases.

Now what I think it's very strange that both packages are tagged TJ. So both should be LV version!

I will buy more TLV1117LV and expect to have the LV version this time!!

I think this IC's wore tagged wrong in Texas? Can this be possible?

  • Hi Julio,

I am not aware of any history of TLV1117 being mismarked and shipped instead of TLV1117-LV.  Since you have already performed an A-B-A swap and determined that the issue follows the device, if you would like to pursue debugging, the quickest course would be for you to return the units to TI.  Below is our return process.  If you choose to go this route, please be sure to work with the distributor who sent you the devices if you ordered through a distributor.  You will also want to be sure to detail the debugging steps you have already taken.

We do not process returns on the forums.  As such we are considering this thread closed at this time.

  • Hello Ryan,

I've ordered for other supplier, will receive parts tomorrow and will test it again.

The parts wore supplied thru an Chinese company that bought and assembled the boards.

Since it's 50 units I don't think its worth it to send back to TI.

Indeed it's a really strange situation.

What I've noticed was the correct parts I can ready very well the labeling, while on the bad components it's really hard to read, can this be a counterfeit part being passed by an original TI part?

    Can this happen?

    Thanks,

    JS

  • Hi Julio,

Unfortunately it is possible that the devices could have been counterfeit.  I agree it is certainly strange that the bad parts had topside markings that were more difficult to read.  We would be able to determine for sure if you were to return the units, but I do understand your point on it being a small quantity.

Below is a link to TI's Anti-counterfeit statement.  Included is a list of authorized distributors which help mitigate the risk of counterfeit devices.

I hope simply swapping out the bad units with your new units will solve your issues, but if you do need further support, please do not hesitate to reach out again.

    Very Respectfully,

    Ryan
