BQ24103A: Chip failure and storage condition

Dear all,

I encounter an issue with some of my devices that includes 4 BQ24103A in parallel.
These devices are sold in Mongolia and there storage conditions are very hard: my devices have been stocked by -40°C.
I sold 10 devices and among them 4 have encountered the problem: the 4 BQ of each device were out of order (either there was no detection signal on output pins or there were no modification on STAT1 pin by connecting the battery).

Do you think there is a link between staorage conditions and high ratio of failure even if the chip is given to be stocked down to -65°C?

Can I get more details on the failure? What was the battery voltage and input voltage? Was CE pin toggled to clear the state machine after power up?

Hi Nicolas,

Any more detail info on the failure? I would not expect cold storage to caused IC damage, unless frost on the IC slowly melts and results in the IC getting wet for extended periods of time.

Here is a capture of the schematic. CE pin is tied to the ground.

I do not have any information about the battery when it has been plugged (between 3V and 7.2V). The power supply is 12V.

Nicolas,

Do the failures follow the IC as you move that IC from board to board or are only certain boards failing?

I am still trying to collect information about how it could happen, sorry for the delay...

I do not understand what you mean by "moving the IC from board to board".

On my device, there are 4 boards like the schematic I sent above. They are all connected to the same 12Vdc. At a certain moment (the one I am trying to determine), my customer says the load of the battery is out of order on the 4 boards. Thus I thought about a problem on the 12V that could damage the BQ. However I have got many devices all over the world and I encounter this issue only with this customer.

Nicolas,

If you move an bad IC to known good board, is the IC still bad? If placed on a BQ24103AEVM, is it still bad? Just trying to identify the PCB as the problem.

I do not have tools to removvethe IC. I am looking for a partner which can help me.

However, I removed all other components and the behavior is still the same.
