TPS5430: broken analysis support

Part Number: TPS5430

Dear TI Engineers,

My customer has designed TPS5430 in their power rail, recently they got many product return from end-customer,

they did the AB-BA test and found there was 1~3% breakdown rate of TPS5430( internal VCC/GND short),

sometimes the PCB near the TPS5430 will be burned down also, their input voltage is 24V and stable.

They are analyzing the root cause for this case, could you kindly help give some advices for this case?

  1. Will the catch diode with wrong parameters may cause the demage of TPS5430 ? Attached is the datasheet, what will happen if they assemble the wrong diode with low-grade peformance?
  2. Attached file include schematics and pcb layout, could you kindly help to review?
  3. Is any any other risk from the system view?

Thanks a lot.

  • Hi, Bruce,

Yes I do have concern about the schematic and layout. The critical tip on layout is, ceramic input cap should be used, and you need to keep the loop which is formed by input cap, IC SW pin and Vin pin, diode, as small as possible. See chapter 10 of the datasheet.

By doing this, we can keep the SW ring less significant.

the diode would also impact the SW ring, if the diode has big reverse recovery. Also if the diode's break down voltage is low, the IC will sure damage.

  • Dear Neal,

Got it, thanks a lot for your support.
