BQ2970: BQ2970 Different Status monitor through controller

Part Number: BQ2970

Hi,

We are using BQ29700 for protecting a single cell Li-ion battery. The schematic is attached. In the datasheet, I have found that the different protection are based on the different voltage level on COUT, DOUT, BAT pins. So, Can I connect them to the controller pins/LED to monitor the different faults in the battery? If yes, can you provide me some information about the tentative connections from the IC to controller/LED.

Thanks.

  • Hi Aakash,

The BQ2970 is a very simple protector, it does not communicate its state other than to control the COUT and DOUT. Decisions are made on the BAT and V- pin voltages and the current state as described in the data sheet.

It may be possible to put an LED on the COUT and DOUT, hese would create a load, be sure you don't create a path to bypass the protection.

To monitor the condition of a BMS device it may be better to select a single cell gauge with protection.  You could monitor it with a MCU and light LEDs for the states of interest.

  • Hi WM5295,

OK. Right now we are implementing BQ2970 in our circuit without any monitoring.

In future, we will definitely think about implementing BMS IC. On that time, I will contact to the TI for any suggestions/ help.

    Thanks.
