BQ34110: Communication error occurs

Hi team.

A communication error occured when my customer try to write firmware on bq34110 from bqStudio.

After that, they can not communicate to bq34110 with I2C.

Bqstudio does not recognize.

How can they communicate?

BQ34110 might work in the ROM mode.

Try the following steps and see if you can recover this bq34110 device.

a) Choose bq34110.bqz after the bqStudio is launched.

b) Go to the Programming tab.

c) Download the default srec file.

They couldn't communicate from the beginning with BqStudio.

Is there any improvement besides connecting to BqStudio?

Hi Kengo,

If bq341110 works in the ROM mode, its i2c address will be different and bqStudio might not be able to communicate with it.

Did they go to the Programming tab and download the default srec file?

Did they see any error message? If so, show me a screenshot.

In general, bqStudio will put the gauge device into ROM mode before downloading the srec file. If the gauge device already works in the ROM mode, bqStudio should be able to program the srec file. I would suggest your customer have a try.

We try according to your instructions, but it did not work.(It can not contact with BqStudio.)

It seems to be no ACK.

As I mentioned before, the device is probably bricked. It would necessary to replace this device with a new one.

1.What is bricked? Is it different from ROM mode?

2.When does bricked happen? (Can you reject it when shipping from TI?)

3.Is there no other way than to replace a bricked device?

Hi Kengo,

BQ34110 is a flashed based gauge and its firmware can be updated by customers. It can be bricked if the device is not programmed correctly.

No, when my customer tried to write, BqStudio was not able to connect to bq34110.

Is there a brick before writing the program?

Hello Kengo,

Check if device is powered. As Andy mentioned, the device is probably bricked due to a bad programming. Get a new EVM and make sure you use the default image on ti.com and program again. Make sure not to lose power during the programming.

Hi Kengo,

Here are my suggestions if they want to check whether that device is really bad.

a) Find a good BQ34110EVM and make sure the bqStudio can communicate with the EVM without any problem.

b) Replace the BQ34110 device on the EVM with the device you want to check.

c) Use the bqStudio to communicate with the EVM again.

Hi Kengo,

Actually, my suggestion is NOT the same as what is already done.

Anyway, how many bad units have been found so far? If the customer really wants to know the root cause, what they can do is to work with a local TI Sales or FAE to submit a customer return job.

Hi Kengo,

I don't see there exits an away to recover a brick device if it doesn't reply to any i2c command.

As I mentioned before, the customer needs to replace the device with a new one.
