BQ34Z110: Changing Battery Chemistry in BQ34Z110 EVM with bqstudio

Part Number: BQ34Z110
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO, , BQ34Z100-G1, GPCCHEM, BQ34Z100EVM, EV2400, BQ34Z100

Hi everyone,

I am evaluating the capabilities of the BQ34Z110 with the EVM and the Bqstudio. In Bqstudio I am able to change the battery chemistry, I apply reset and I can see the new CHEM ID has been written in the flash memory, however the battery capacity has not changed. I am using a Li ion 3.7V 2600mAh (https://www.sparkfun.com/products/12895). After changing the CHEM ID the registers windows still shows the Full Charge Capacity at 973mAh, even if I choose the model ICR18650-2600mA (CHEM_ID=0x1996) from the possible chemistries that Bq studio offers.

If the full charge capacity has not chaged, is the BQ34Z110 calculating the SOC properly?

What am I missing?

Best regards

  • First of all, bq34z110 is a bit old device. I would suggest you switch to bq34z100-G1, which has improved firmware and better software support (e.g bqStudio).

How did you select the chemistry id? Did you use the GPCCHEM?

Also, make sure you go through the DESIGN STEPS in the datasheet and have all the necessary parameters configured.

    How

  • Hi Andy,

Thanks for your reply. Effectively I am using bq34z100-G1, bqStudio version 1.3.86 and chemistry version 774. I am using  the BQ34Z100EVM with the EV2400.  The bq studio identifies the device properly as  bq34z100G1 (0100-0-16). Sorry for the mistake with the part numbers.

I have chosen the chemistry based on the manufacturer name (ICR18650) and capacity (2600mAh), I have selected 0x1305. For the moment I have not performed any test so I am not using GPCCHEM yet.

I have tried also to change the DATA flash memory in the Data memory Window of bqStudio. Basically I changed the design capacity and design energy. I have written the new values to the device and the writing and the scan were correct.  I have exported the new configuration to a .gg file (see attached).

However even after that when I go to the register window, the full and remaining capacities remain at the default values.  Should these values change with the new FLASH configuration? or maybe they need to complete a full cycle?

    Best regards ICR18650 2600 Bat 1.gg.csv

  • See my comments below.

A proper chemistry id is very important for an IT gauge device. I would suggest you collect data according to the GPCHEM instruction manual and make sure you use the best chemistry id available.

Read through Section 8.2.2 of BQ34z100 datasheet and configure all the necessary parameters.  Also, you need to run a learning cycle.
