TPS53353: Risk of exceeding the recommended operating voltage range

Part Number: TPS53353

Hi Team,

In my customer's circuit, unfortunately Vin applied voltage is sometimes beyond recommended operating range due to input side ripple.
I understand the device does not destroy because it does not exceed the absolute maximum rating, but what is the risk of this condition?

Also, How about same issue in SW node side?

Regards,

Takashi Onawa

  • Hi Onawa-san,

I see no concern exceeding the recommended operating VIN temporarily as long as the absolute max voltages at VIN and LL are never exceeded. I would interpret the recommended max for VIN as a DC voltage so it is expected for there to be some high frequency ripple exceeding the recommended max.

On the other hand, I would be careful about exceeding the SW node recommended operating max for time periods >20 ns. If exceeding this recommended max there is not much margin to the absolute max so there is possibility the absolute max may be exceed in some operating condition. Time periods <20ns are only covered by the absolute max table. However, I think if the recommended max of LL is exceeded, most likely the absolute max is also being exceeded.

  • HI Anthony-san,

Thanks for your prompt response on this.OK, I understood that.

  • HI Anthony-san,

Sorry, I got additional question from the customer so please allow me to open this thread again.

In your answer above you mentioned about Vin and LL, but can we say that temporary violation of VBST operation range is also no issue?

It seems that they can see 3.3V min voltage at VBST due to large ringing.

  • Hi Onawa-san,

No concern with VBST dropping to 3.3V as the abs max minimum is -0.3V for this pin. The recommended operating minimum of 4.5V with respect ground should probably be removed as it is confusing. The one with respect to LL is more meaningful.
