EMB1428Q: Some question about EMB1428 and EMB1499

Part Number: EMB1428Q

Hi,

For continuous balancing operation ,I send start balancing (0x10 OR 0x30)  followed by stop balancing (0x00):

When I send 0x10 then the return code is 0xA1,When I send 0x00 then the return code is 0xa0,and the emb1428 and emb1499 are work well.

But,when I send 0x30 then the return code is 0xA3,when I send 0x00 then the return code is 0x20 or 0x60, the emb 1428  works well but the emb1499 doesn't.

I don't understand under the two conditions ,the emb1428 part work well (Vplus-Vminus = one single cell's voltage),the emb1499 part is same why the second condition isn't work?

  • Hi User,
It sounds like the EMB1499 can run correctly with cell 2 selected but not cell 3. If I understand the codes it would be an overcurrent or overvoltage fault when operating cell 3. I would guess the board does not have control of all the switching FETs, since the fault does not appear to be recognized from the 1428, it is probably working well, but the FETs must not establish the required path. Check that all the connections are good from the EMB1428 and the FET gates and sources. With the problem at cell 3 look at the cell 3 tap switches and the polarity switches since those will be different than that used for cell 2. The cell 2 tap was used for cell 2 balance so that path is likely good.
  • Hi,
I didn't mention that cell 2 was selected. All that I say is cell1 and cell 3,beause the polarity switches of cell 1 and cell 3 are the same but the cell switches are different.Maybe I didn't say clearly. Now I want to recharacterize the problem :

For continuous balancing operation ,I send start balancing (0x10 OR 0x30) followed by stop balancing (0x00):

    1) For cell 1 when I send 0x10 then the return code is 0xA1,When I send 0x00 then the return code is 0xa0 . Measure Vplus-Vminus = Vcell1 and Cell 1 is charging.

    2) For cell 3 when I send 0x30 then the return code is 0xA3,When I send 0x00 then the return code is 0x20 or 0x60. Measure Vplus-Vminus = Vcell3,but Cell3 isn't charging.

    So ,I think when operate cell1 the emb1428 and emb1499 are work well,when operate cell3 the emb1428 works well but emb1499 doesn't.Am I right?If I am right ,why?

    Best Regard!
  • Hi User,

As WM mentioned, it seems that the EMB1499 is functioning correctly, as it balanced cell 1. It seems that the switch matrix is also operating correctly, as the cell voltage appears at the output of the converter.

So I think the next logical question is this: What's different between cell 1 and cell 3?

    What is your balance current?
Is this a board you made yourself? Or the EM1402 EVM?

As WM mentioned, my gut feeling is that an OV/UV or overcurrent protection is tripping for some reason. I would suggest probing around the converter to look for irregularities,
