BQ76920: SOC calculation using bq76920

Part Number: BQ76920
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ78350-R1

Hi, We are using the BQ76920 for 3 Series Li-ion cells as a monitor and would like to to know if we can also retrieve the battery state of charge (% battery capacity remaining) or use this as a fuel gauge in some way.

We would like to avoid calculating the state of charge using the voltage / current draw since this is more processor intensive.

Is this possible?

  • Hi Deepak,

Your microcontroller may communicate with the AFE via SMBus, an I2C like interface. However, state of charge using the voltage / current draw would need to be calculated on your processor.

However, I have good news! The bq78350-R1 pairs with this protector as a monitor and fuel gauge, allowing you to offload that processing to the bq78350-R1. The bq78350-R1 may be queried by your MCU for the State of Charge as well as other values. Many processing tasks may be offloaded to this device. The device can also be configured to broadcast current, voltage and/or alerts.

    Sincerely,
    Bryan Kahler
