bq2416x / bq24163 SYS rail volrage too high and unregulated

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24163, BQ24160

Dear Sir,

I have bq24163 charger in target desing and I have problem with output voltage on SYS rail. According to datasheet there should be 3.5V in default without battery. But there is voltage about 5V with 5.5V on input and 6V with 7V input. Also when 5V is applied to input then charger reports input adapter error and output is only pulsing (on recovery test).

I reviewed design according to reference desing and can't see any problem. Could you please give me some clue where can be problem?

  • Does this happen only on 1 IC or multiple?  If 1 IC, then I suspect IC damage.  If multiple then I suspect board assembly problem where the input voltage is shorted to the SYS voltage.  If not input and a battery at BAT, what is voltage at SYS?

  • Dear Jeff,

thank you for reply. This happen to 2 ICs so IC failure can be excluded.

When IN is open and BAT is connected to battery, then SYS is following voltage on BAT during discharge.

Tomorrow I will receive bq24160 EVM board so I can compare my design physically. At moment I don't see any problems, short circuits or similar problems. But this doesn't mean that mistake don't exist. I will update you tomorrow.

  • Dear Jeff,

Problem solved. There was error on pcb due to manufacturer error (missed landing pad under one GND pin od bq24163.

With new board is everything fine.

    Thank you for your time.
