bq24103 vs bq24103A zener protection

A customer has a product using the bq24103 in the field and neglected to add the protection zener on the output. Are there specific conditions that I can point to where he is going to need to be concerned? (some level of Vin....when the battery gets removed, for example) The engineer has seen no failures but has his quality group looking for an explanation of whether they should be concerned about the lack of the zener. They are not using the A version.

Please check the date code. The new bq24103 is same as bq24103A. It doesn't need that zener.

I beleive that the new bq24103 should be later than July, 2008.

I have read the datasheet that is revisied in March 2010 (slus606o.odf), it still states that only BQ24103A and BQ24104 need no zener diode. I would like to the different between BQ24103a and BQ24103. And does zener diode need for BQ24103?
