Function test jig in production line

Hi everyone,

Now our customer is looking for the idea to check the function of charger IC in production line. I know that it can be done by using CC/CV power supply system but it's not just not realistic in production line. Can you tell me any idea to achieve it?

Requirement

  • Vin = 12V
  • Li-Ion 1cell
  • Fast charge current = 500mA

Please let me know if you need more information.

Best Regards,

  • Hello,

Can you give me more details about this production line test? Do you need a recommendation of a charger to do the test or are you asking for a method to do it? What is the main difference between the production line test and the normal application?

    Thanks,

    Wenjia

  • Hi Wenjia,

Thank you for your response. I'm asking the method to do it. They hope to check if the fast charge current flow correctly and regulate VBAT correctly without actual battery in their production line.

  • Hello Satoshi,

If a real battery is not possible, then I'm afraid you need a source meter which can force voltage and sink current to connect to your system. Make sure the line resistance is minimum t avoid big voltage drop. Then you can put the charger in pre-charge, fast-charge and termination stage by changing the voltage through the source meter. You have to have something to imitate the battery.

    Thanks,
    Wenjia
  • Hi Wenjia,

I know that we can check it without real battery by using source meter which can force voltage and sink current as you said, but it is not just not realistic to prepare multiple such units in production line because they are expensive...

It may be short duration to check the current, so I think it can be done by using large capacitor like supercapacitor. Do you have some idea by using such discrete components?

  • Hi Satoshi,

I have not tried testing the charger with a sup cap. Ideally it should work and you should see the programmed charging current going to the cap. However I'm not sure how accurate you can control the voltage of the cap. If the cap is big enough then you might be able to observe all the charging phases  ( pre-charge, fast charge and termination) but it will be difficult to capture the switch points accurately.

    Thanks,

    Wenjia

  • Hi Wenjia,

I tried to evaluate by using electric double-layer cap and could see fast charge current as attached. I'll suggest customer to evaluate this method. Thank you for your advice!
