BQ40Z60 - It's heats up when charging

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ40Z60

Hi,

I designed PCB with BQ40Z60 based on BQ40Z60EVM board, only I changed FET to more stronger.

I can connect with PCB via SMBus, discharg. is work, current and voltage monitor is work, but I have a problem with charging.

When I set CHARGING EN then BQ. is heats up do 70 deg. I don't know why, he consumption 80mA via VCC pin but why?

I check all soldering pads and it's look ok.

Maybe you have some idea why it happens?

  • I am not familiar with the quirks of the bq40z60, but, anytime you change the output (final drive) stage of a device that relies on a feedback circuit that helps to regulate, you are likely to change the internal performance the control device. This is sometimes caused by what we might have miss in the performance data sheet. After checking your circuit, check the Data sheet. I would start with the feedback, then the Gate drive. If you use a bootstrap you might have a high reverse current diode?
