bq24770 SLA Charging

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24770, BQ2031

I like the NVDC architecture of the bq24770. It solves a lot of problems for us. However, we need to charge a SLA battery.

Since the bq24770 is host controlled, is there any reason I cannot charge a 12V/3A SLA battery?

I understand the charging algorithm for SLA batteries (I basically want to imitate the bq2031 device.) I am curious what the steps are to implement that algorithm on the bq24770?

Foe example, can I set the bq24770 current (charging) and not set the bq24770 voltage? Then monitor the battery voltage until it reaches Vbulk, and set the bq24770 to a constant voltage but stop the bq24770 from charging?

I'm unsure how this would work.

Thank you.

  • bq24770 has a minimum system voltage setting, if the battery voltage is lower than that value, the charge current will be clamped at 384mA or lower. You can change the minimum system votlage register to a lower voltage to avoid this issue.

Basically, I agree it can charge a 12V/3A SLA battery because the bq24770 is host controlled. Customer can control the charging profile.
