BQ24230 Power Path

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24230

Hi TI Experts,

Our side is planning to use the BQ24230 as the battery charger IC.

Battery: Single Cell Li-Po

Input Voltage: 24V

We choose the BQ24230 due to the Power Path Management.

According to the datasheet, if the adapter is present, the battery charger IC will give priority to the adapter to power the load.

When the input source is disconnected, only then it will switch to battery for power the load.

This is my understanding, Is that correct?

In addition, can the BQ24230 allow the battery to power the load during the present of adapter?

Is there any hardware configuration need to be done?

If not, is there any TI's battery charger that has this feature?

Because we may need this feature on the application.

Please advice.

Thanks,

  • If I understand your questions correctly, the bq24230 will perform as you would like.

There are two modes of importance here, both detailed in the datasheet.

Dynamic Power Path Management (DPPM) reduces the charging current if the load plus the charging current is greater than the programmed maximum input current. In this case, the battery charging current is reduced to allow the load to be serviced.

Battery Supplement Mode allows the battery to be used to service the load if DPPM does not satisfy the load.
