BQ24032A Chip getting damaged

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24032A

Hi,

We are using BQ24032A for charging the li ion battery. It is working fine at starting. But in some boards it is getting damaged after some days usage.

But in most of the boards it is working fine, but some getting damaged. Let me know why this happens, due to any short circuit?

But in the datasheet saying it have short circuit protection.

I am attaching the schematics which we are using. Let me know any one can help us?

Please review the schematics and let us know any modification needed.

Thanks and Regards,

Ameesh.v.v

  • Ameesh,

I do not see any issues with the schematic.

Can you give more details on what is being damaged?  What are the conditions during testing?  Are there any noticeable heating differences between the passing and failing boards?

In many cases, when there are working boards on small initial builds and some failures, it is a manufacturing issue with the boards.  Depending on the actual failures, this could lead to an area of the board or an incorrect component.

Can you confirm your intended charge current?

What is the load current on the OUT pin?

    Regards,

    Dick

  • Dear Dick,

    Thanks for your kind information.
There is no noticeable heating difference. Battery is not getting charged, when we replace with new chip it is working fine.
The charge current is 226mA and the load current at normal condition around 400mA.

Let me know due to any short circuit this will happen?
Before going for volume production we need to solve the issue, so can you help us.

    Thanks & Regards,

  • Ameesh,

The device does have short circuit protection.  When the bad unit is removed, are there any signs of an issue with the soldering?

Are there any signs during test that the unit will fail before it does (abnormal currents or voltages)?

Could this be a board manufacturing issue, not a device issue?

    Regards,

    Dick

  • Dear Dick,

Let me know if we short the battery pins after connecting to the board will cause any damage?

    Regards,

  • Ameesh,

The bq24032A has battery short protection. That means it will open the BAT FET if it sees a short on the BAT pin. It does not protect the battery fi the battery is shorted. You would need a protector device to do that.

  • Dick,

Battery have protection circuit , battery is still okay no damage happens in battery.
Only some charging chips damaging ( In 30 units 5 chips damaged). We don't know why this happening.
Any one have previous experience like this.

    Regards,

  • Ameesh,

The bq24032A has been around for quite some time and this is the first I have seen this.

I highly suspect a manufacturing issue when building the board.  Contamination in the board that takes some time to present itself is a possibility.  I am not sure where the defect would be.

What is the specific damage you are seeing?

    Regards,

    Dick
