Use dual source (piezo and PV) to charge battery

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25505

Hi!

I want to design a hybrid energy harvester using piezoelectric and photovoltaic cells at indoor ambient, so energy harvested will be ultra very low power (uA, 1V~2V), Load is a 10uA node based on MCU.

BQ25505  seems a good option, but i dont know how to integrate the dual input on it,  maybe made use of two IC and then charge the battery with another ic???

there is any application note that uses dual inputs??

Thanks in advance,

kind regards

  • Hello Julian,

I do not see any published application notes that highlight how to support two inputs.

Probably the simplest way would be to use an ultra low forward voltage drop pair of Schotky diodes to diode or you input power source so that the bq25505 will take the high voltage our the two sources.

Depending on what your environment is there is a very small chance that you piezoelectric source will ever produce more power than your photovoltaic source. It might just work better to use jsut the solar cell and adjust its size and the size of your storage element to allow it to store enough energy to make it through periods of lower light intensity.
