BQ24650EVM-639: Modification for Maximum Charge Current of 8A operation?

Part Number: BQ24650EVM-639
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24650

Hi all,

I have the bq24650EVM, I want to test the EVM at 8A charging current.

The bq24650 EVM data sheet says:

Q1. Do I have to replace L1 and R6 to higher current values in order to operate bq24650EVM at 8A charging current (Ichrg)?

Q2. If I want to operate the bq24650EVM at 8A charging current do I have to provide an input supply current of 8A

Q3. Can I use bq24650EVM to charge a 4s30p configuration of Li-ion 18650 cell battery pack?

Thanks and regards!

  • Hi Swaroop,

    Q1:

You can refer to datasheet section 8.3.19.

For inductor, you need to use 3.3uH and make sure the inductor current won't reach the saturation current.

For R6, you need to change R6 to 5mohm to set the charging current at 8A.

    Q2:

It depends on input and output power. You can use Vout*Iout=Vin*Iin*efficiency to see how many power rating you may need to use at input.

    Q3:

BQ24650 could support 4s. But for the 30p, what is your charging current for the 4s30p? If you would use the charging current higher than 8A, you need to use two bq24650 in parallel for the thermal concern.

    Best regards,

  • Thanks a lot Ann_Lien,

I will keep these design steps in mind while designing.

    Thanks again.
