bq40z50 external cell balancing

In Fast Cell Balancing Using External MOSFET (SLUA420), the example uses a bq29330, showing a connection for Cell 1 negative going through an Resistor/Capacitor filter to a pin on the 29330.

The 40z50 doesn't have this connection available externally (as described in SLUA660, Section 2.3).

So what is the recommended way to connect the external MOSFET for Cell 1?

    I noticed you did not place a filter capacitor in you drawing? should it be added between R3/pin VC1/2/3/4 to GND?

    You will need to use a PFET to balance the lowest cell, but we recommend using NFETs for the other three. This is due to the implementation of the voltage sense / internal balancing circuits inside the device.

    Using the internal cell balancing, lower current, will require more time to balance the cells. It could take several cycles, if they are severely imbalanced. The internal cell balancing algorithm will allow you to balance cell simultaneously, where the external circuit will sequence through the channels.

  • I assume that after balancing the OCV of the cells should be perfectly equal.


    Unfortunatelly the smallest difference at the end of charge is about 40mV, most times a lot more!


    I have recognized, that after calibration there is a maximum of 3mV diffence between the cell voltages measured by BQStudio and my datalogger. I guess that is acceptable!

    This influences the OCV and therefore the Qmax measurement, but sometimes there is a difference of 400mAh while using 3 2500mAh LiFePo4 cells.
    This has lead to an even bigger difference of the OCVs because the bq40z50 has dissipated capacity although the OCVs were quite close.


    Can you tell me how to figure out whats the reason for this strange behaviour?

    The Impedance Track devices use capacity balancing instead of balancing to the cell voltage, although there is a correlation between the two. We have found a problem with setting CBM=0. This will enable simultaneous cell balancing and this can cause cell imbalance, if Cells 1 and 2 are scheduled for balancing. This is caused by the fact that the ground return path for Cell 1 does not have a series resistor and the balancing current for Cell 2 will traverse through the internal Cell 1 balancing FET and return to the1N cell connection, because this will be the lowest resistance path. This will result in Cell 1 getting over balanced. You should set CBM=1 on the be40z50. The simultaneous cell balancing option has been removed from the bq40z50-R1 device.

  • I guess that is not my problem, because CBM is set to 1 all the time. So no update is needed!


    I am using external balancing. I have build up 2 packs each including 4S3P of the A123 LifePo with 2500mAh, so total capacity of 7500mAh.
    Because of measuring higher currents than 32A I had to divide all current related settings by 2, that makes 3750mAh.

    After several Qmax updates both packs show me that the capacity of cell 2-4 is around 4000mAh-->8000mAh. I think that may be realistic, because the value of 2500mAh is a minimum value. But i do not agree with the value of cell 1 which is around 4100-4200mAh-->8200-8400mAh. Such a big difference between the cells is not realistic. Because of this the Pack imbalances the cells after every cycle even more.

    Can you tell me how to overcome this issue, because it seems to be a faulty Qmax Update of cell1 which is responsable.

    You need to switch to the bq40z50-R1 firmware. There are some cell balancing issues with the bq40z50 that result in imbalance in Cell 1. You can download the -R1 firmware and the bqStudio files from its website.

  • How do I switch the firmware without having to reconfigure the device? I see that there is the bq40z50R1 component as a choosing option in BqSTudio. But how do I switch now to the new firmware?
  • We do not have a conversion tool to import the bq40z50 parameter set into the bq40z50-R1. You will need to update the parameters in the data flash by hand. If you have completed the optimization cycle, then you can use the Ra table and Qmax data from the z50 device.

    • Export gg.csv file from your pack.
    • Program the bq40z50-R1 srec file.
    • Program the ChemID.
    • Update the data flash parameters by hand using the data in the gg.csv file.

  • So we are not talking about just a firmware update, I need to change the whole controller, right?
  • You do not have to change any hardware. You can just program the new firmware into your existing pack.

    would you recommend everyone, who uses external balancing to upgrade to the R1 firmware?
    are there anymore differences between 01 to R1 firmware?
    for next batch of production, would you recommend to purchase the R1 chip?

    Yes, you should switch to the bq40z50-R1, if you use external cell balancing. There is a change list on the -R1 website, but it does not look like the cell balancing change is on the list.

    I have changed the firmware an did several Qmax updates. But I guess Cell Balancing still does not work properly.

    right now the cell balance times show values around 26000 seconds! The configured time is 80 and 81 seconds, that makes a difference of 325 mAh!


    Another weird behaviour is that balancing started already below the configured value of 80% for min RSOC for Balancing.

    do you have a specific P&N-Channel-Dual-Mosfet you can recommend for external balancing?

    We do not have specific FETs to recommend. We have used the PFET on the bq3060 EVM for cell balancing. A FET comparable to this will work for Cell 1 and a comparable NFET will work for Cells 2 - 4.
