Battery Gauging - Basic proceeding - chem ID

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ27510, EV2400, BQ27510EVM

Hello

I'm working with the BQ27510 (EVM and on a prototype System), EV2400 and the Gauge Studio.

My System is working so far but I got some basic understanding problems.

- I wrote the Chem ID of my Batt. into the BQ27510 (I can read the correct ID).
But the FullAvailableCapacity still is 1000mAh instead 2900mAh. I thought the Chem ID describes the Batt. with all it's parameters. So whats the Chem Id for?

- If I understood right I should do a learning cycle for my Batt. and write a Golden Image to the BQ27510. How should I proceed to get the correct Batt. parameters into the BQ27510? Can I do this with the Gauge Studio?

- What are the main steps I need to do that I get the correct parameters out of my Batt.?

Thanks in advance for every help getting me a better basic understanding.

  • Hello Gerald,

Programming the chemID is one step in a multi-step process in configuring the gas gauge to match your battery. The chemID contains information about the type of chemistry the battery has, however, you will also need to change Design Capacity and Design Energy.

These variables will tell the gas gauge on the capacity of the battery. In many cases, you can have batteries with the same chemistry but different capacities.

For more information on these variables, please refer to the TRM: http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/sluua35/sluua35.pdf

  • Hello Kang Kang

Thanks for the information about ChemID.

In the old SW bq27741G1 (bq Gas Gauge Evaluation Software) there is some kind of Wizard bqEASY helping me to configure the parameters for my purpose. And also to write the Golden Image as described in  http://www.ti.com/lit/an/slua544/slua544.pdf.

Is there a way to do that with the new GaugeStudio Software? Do you have a manual for that?

As I have some compatibility problems with the old Software and my setup.

    Thanks, Gerald

  • Hello Gerald,

Which version of bq27510 are you using?

    Is it a G1, G2, or G3?

    Thanks,

    Kang Kang

  • Hello Kang Kang

On my Prototype I'm Using the G2 version.

On the BQ27510EVM I made an update to G3 version (And the Evalbaord I'm trying to use with the Gauge Studio). As I understood, it's possible to make an update on my Prototype too (from G2 -> G3)!?

  • Hello Gerald,

You should be able to create the files you need from the GaugeStudio Golden Image plug-in.

Once you've ran a learning cycle and an accuracy cycle, the Ra tables will update to the learned values and you can generate a golden image by simply using the Golden Image plug-in.

Can you provide me your GG file off-line so I can verify that it looks okay to run the learning cycle?

    Thanks,
