I am working on a new project that is using the BQ20Z90-V150 Li-Ion battery gas gauge IC. We are going to be using the new Samsung INR18650-25R cell for the application. Currently your list of cells supported by the IC does not list this cell option. When will this be updated to support the new Samsung cell. Thanks.

Hi Trent,

New cells are added at customer request. The process is provided free by TI, but we will need cells sent in. Two cells if they are rechargable and 6 if they are primary are needed. The process will take between 1-4 weeks from time of arrival at TI, depending on whether or not the cell matches a current ID or needs a completely new ID generated.

If you would like the cell characterized, then please send them to the address provided below with the attached Excel file filled in.

Josiah,

I will send you the cells right away for characterizing. You state that you need 2 cells. So you need 2 bare cells or do you need 2 cell packs in the configuration we are using them in. We are using the cells in a 4S2P configuration. Please confirm and I will get you the cells you need.

I have another question regarding the BQ20Z90-V150 IC and the SHA-1 encryption. I have a customer that currently has a battery pack that does not have SHA-1 encryption capabilities. We are redesigning the battery with the BQ20Z90-V150 IC and told them about the SHA-1 option. The question they have is how does this migrate to their past product they already have in the field. If we update the battery they will update their software to use this function on their next PCBA spin. I think I know how this works but thought I would ask you as well. Please tell me if the below items are correct.

1. The new battery that has SHA-1 enabled would still work with the old product in the field fine. It would power up their old devices fine because they currently do not check for SHA-1 in their existing product.

2. Their new product however would only be able to use the new battery that provides the SHA-1 communication. This is because the device itself would not power on unless they saw the correct SHA-1 communications. So the new product release would only be able to use the new battery that uses the SHA-1 and all old batteries would not work on a new device.

Please confirm this is correct. Thanks.

Hello Trent,

Josiah looks after Chemistry issues so this question falls back to me as the 20z apps guy to answer. What you state sounds logical but I will double check with an SHA-1 expert.

Incidentally, did you see the 20z gauge app note on SHA-1

Trent,

We will need two bare cells. The test is done on the bare cells to generate the ID which models the cell's characteristics. You will need to run a learning cycle in order to update the resistance parameters of the pack that you will be using.

Ok. I will get 2 cells out to you very soon. You should see them early next week. I will send the spec sheet on the cells along with the excel cell characterization Request form. Once you receive them please let me know. Thanks.

Trent,

I double checked on your SHA-1 question and was told you should be fine as long as the old gauge and new gauge have the same register maps (at least for the commands you use).

The two cells were shipped to you last week. They were shipped via UPS overnight delivery. UPS tracking number is J223 127 8818. It was delivered this morning and left at the dock. Just checking to see if you got the cells. Thanks.
