BQ Studio Chemistry Update

I need to update the chemistry list in BQ Studio but I can't.

The 'update' link in Studio doesn't work so I downloaded the zip file but that didn't work either. Looking inside the zip, there don't appear to be any chemistry files, just a handful of other files.

Can you provide me with a way to update the chemistry. Currently I can find my cells using BQ Easy but not Studio and given I'm using a BQ40z50 I'm a bit stuck atm.

I am not sure why the updater is not working for you. You can copy the contents of the Chemistry folder that was downloaded to this location and the new chemistry files should be available after you reopen bqStudio.

C:\ti\BatteryManagementStudio\chemistry

If it helps, the address stored in C:\ti\BateryManagementStudio\chemistry\locations\updateservers.txt is \\dlev164\ToolReleases\EVSW_SDK\chemistry\Archive which I clearly don't have access to.

I'm using BQ Studio 1.3.18 (latest)

Manually copying the files seemed to work - I'm curious as to why the update for studio is 600kb and for BQ Easy it's over 100MB...

We did find an issue with the built in Chemistry Updater in bqStudio and we are working to correct it. We are sorry about any inconvenience that it may have caused.

One more problem - does BatteryManagementStudio support bq34z100?
BQstudio point the name bq34z100G1 but not bq34z100 ver 06. It writes the attention about it.
Is it the cause why chemistry list is empty?

bqStudio does not support the bq34z100 v0.06 device. You will need to use the bqEvaluation Software tool. It can be downloaded from the bq34z100 product folder.

The bq34z100-G1 adds some new features and updates to the Impedance Track algorithm. The addition of the smoothing filter is the most exciting change, because it will provide better SOC reporting performance for transient load applications. The gauge will also support Li-Ion, LiFePO4, PbA , NiMH and NiCd cell chemistries. The bqStudio program will be the evaluation platform for the -G1 device, but it will not be updated to support the standard bq34z100 device.

Dear Tom, thank you. It's really exciting. We will wait G1-version for new design.

And what about the future of bq769x0? Will it contain the possibilities of bq34z100-G1? It would be interesting to have the impedance track technology and cells protection in one chip with very low sleep supply current. Now we use bg34z100 and bq77910 but one chip with one rich communication line would be more convinient than 2. For entire happiness I would like also SPI instead of I2C.

What cell chemistry and how many series cells do you need to support? We have several options for 4S, but the bq34z100-G1 will be the best choice for >4S. There are no plans to offer the bq34z100 with a SPI interface.

Now we use NCR18650PD 6s (for 24 V power supply). Problem is to use big ammount of cells (about 100 cells) for long-time unmanned application. We try to have separate gas gauge for each colomn of 6 cells. During work under MSP430 control we will periodicaly select between different columns and connect one of them with our common load.

Dear Tom! I was sure that I've answered you, but didn't find the answer at a forum.
We use NCR18650PD 6S now (for 24 V). We try to design management of power supply for the unmanned device for long-term application (about one year).
We naturally need very small current of power supply, especially in a sleep mode.
We want to use many (f.e. 16) columns with separate gg monitoring of each column under the general control of MSP430.

Wehad some small difficulties with collecting various I2C with identical addresses to thecommon serial port, but it was no really big problem.
Naturally to us it would be better to have fuel control, protection and balancing in one chip with the general line of communication.

Vladimir,
I did not realize that was a question. The I2C address is fixed in these devices, so you would need an I2C communications multiplexer to communicate to more than one of them.

Yes, of cause. We did it.
The question was to have gg, balanse and protection in one chip as in bq769x0 but with all monitoring features as in bq34z100. Will TI plan convergence the design of bq34z100 and design bq769xo?

The bq78350 controller/gauge was designed for the bq769x0 devices, but it uses a CEDV gauging solution. We do not have an IT gauging solution to support that AFE family at this time. There are no plans to modify the bq34z100 to support interfacing with an AFE.

Dear Tom! Thank you for your answer. But my question was not about AFE but about the possibility of combination of bq34z100 and bq77910 in one chip. i.e. gg, protection and balancing of consecutive cells (f.e. 6s cells). In this case there will be enough only one chip with the common communication line for a column, but not combination of bq34z100 and bq77910 . It would be much more convenient for new designs.

We chose to use a chipset approach to support higher cell count applications, because it improved flexibility and cost. You could consider the bq78350 and bq76925 for the application. It is a two chip solution, but you only have to communicate with the bq78350.

I have also problem with chem ID. Where can I find .zip file. Update doesn't work.

You can search for Chemistry Updater on the TI website and download the file for bqStudio. Add the .zip extension to it and then use the Help >> Update Chemsitry tool in bqStudio to import the data.
