BQ34Z100 FCC and RC suddenly drops or goes to 0 after 19 cycles

Dear all,

Our fuel gauge works with LI-ION pack 20S20P or 20S10P and measuring voltage from lower 10 cells.

We were looking on forum but we cant find out what we do wrong.

Everything seems to be OK, we performed calibration and learning cycle. RC and SOC changes correctly and after some cycles SOH drop to 99% so it looks OK.

But after 19 cycles we find out that in one battery (20s20p) FCC and RC suddenly goes to 0.

Another problem is, that in other two smaller batteries (20s10p) when we charge it to max voltage (84V) FCC and RC drops 25 or 50%

first one (17 cycles):

RC = 1982 -> 1102

FCC = 2002 -> 1102

second one (14 cycles):

RC = 2003 -> 1571

FCC = 2006 -> 1571

Do you have any clue what is the reason of that behavior?

Could you look at enclosed gg file from 20s20p battery? Please change the extension of attached file to .gg.

     The first two Ra grid points are way out of line. We will need to know at what point that get so large. You could try changing these parameters back to their normal values to see if this corrects the problem. It will probably take additional cycles and data collection to determine how the values are getting so large.

    Thank you for reply, we will collect data from few cycles and write what happens.

    I have two more questions:

    First one:

    we are using LI-ION ICR18650-22p, for that marking Chem-ID is 0241, but Description of that Chem-ID says  NiCoMn/carbon. Do we choose right Chem-ID?

    Second one:

    I checked my calculations of Design Capacity and Design energy, and find out that they are incorrect. Is there posibility that this is the reason of my problem?

    Design Capacity: 4300 should be 4100

    Design Energy: 15695 should be 17220

    Becouse single cell have 2050 mAh and 4,2V

    Design Capacity = 20 cells * 2050 mAh = 41000 and after scalling by 10 DC = 4100

    Design Energy = 4100 (Design capacity) *42V (max measured pack voltage) / 10 (cells in series) = 17220

    Am I correct?

    You have the Design Energy Scale set to 10, so the units are cWh. The Design Energy should be entered as 1722 cWh.

    Are you using a ~1 mohm sense resistor? I just wanted to confirm based on the current calibration data.

    I would export a gg file every 5 minutes and log data at a 2 sec rate when running the next profiles. This will provide more data for analysis.

    I want back to calculating values for Design Capacity and Energy.

    we scale the Design Capacity by 10, do we need scale Desing energy again by 10?

    Design Capacity = 20 cells * 2050 mAh = 41000 mAh and after scalling by 10 DC = 4100 cAh

    So, 17220 cAh or 1722 cAh is correct?

    for Design Energy calculation use maximum voltage or nominal voltage?

    The device does not interpret mAh as cWh when you scale the current. It still thinks that you have a 4100 mAh pack. If you had the Design Energy scale set to 1, then the Design Energy would be 17220 mWh. 

    I have seen people use the max voltage and other use the design voltage (3.6V) for the calculation. I have not seen it make much difference.

    Do you still have the files used for the optimization cycle? If so, could you send them to me? Qmax looks too low for this pack, because the SOC reaches 0% well before the Termination Voltage is reached. If you can provide log file with a full, uninterrupted, discharge, then I can verify the ChemID and help with the optimization cycle.

    Yes I have that file. (enclosed). I checked Termination voltage and pack protection settings. I think it's incorrect becouse we have UV Treshold set to 2,9 V.

    I should provide you data from uninterrupted discharge cycle today.

    I provide data from one uninterrupted discharge cycle. Could you look at them?

    Battery was cut-off becouse of undervoltage on one cell. It happen becouse when I charge the battery I need to turn off balancing for logging data from bq34z100. I will turn on ballancing and charge battery without logging data.

    These log files still do not discharge down to the Term Voltage. Do you want to discharge down to 27500mV?

    No, I want discharge down to 29000 mV. 

    Tommorow I'll send you a proper discharge cycle. We change settings according to earlier posts and now we are charging battery. After discharging I'll send log data.

    You should change the Cell Termination Voltage to 2900 mV, so that the gauge will handle the end of discharge properly.

    I send you files from discharge cycle from another battery, unfortunately this time discharge end's on 3,167 V. Could you look at those files?

    I'll do another cycle and see if the battery will discharge down to Termination Voltage.

    The discharge data looks pretty good. The SOC reached 0% a little earlier than the Termination voltage, but this could be expected since the pack did not rest before the discharge started. Do you have concerns with this performance?

  • ChemID 241 is a older characterization and this cell has been re-characterized more recently. ChemID 2002 is the most recent release. ChemID 2021 was released for the ICR18650-22PM cell. I checked the OCV table for these two ChemIDs and they are close, but the series resistances are different.

    Our BMS work with two similar cells "ICR18650-22P" or "ICR18650 MF1" do we need diffrent settings for this two cells? What error could be expected, if we use the same settings?

    The gauging looked good. I checked the chemistry data for the ChemIDs 286 and 2002 and the discharge curves do diverge in the middle of the profile. You will see an accuracy hit if you use the same ChemID for both cells.

    After tests we have a problem with one battery with 22P cells.

    BQ34z100 after 37 cycles shows 89% of SOH 36.3 Ah, end client can't approve this behaviour.

    We measured capacity with external logger and actual capacity of that battery is 41.53 Ah.

    Another thing is that after charging that battery (11) to SOC = 100% after weekend SOC drops to 72% and RC drops from 36.3 Ah to 25.83 Ah.

    The main differences that I see between bad file and the good file are that the pack was operated at a lower temperature, Qmax is about 10% lower and the Ra table values are higher. All of these factors will affect FCC, RM and SOC. Also, there is a firmware bug that has the SOH formula use the ambient temperature instead of using FCC @ 25 degC. This can affect the SOH value. One area of concern are the Ra table values in the source.gg file. They do not match the Ra table values for ChemID 2002. If the ChemID is not set properly, then this can affect everything. Can you export a senc file and send it me for analysis? You can place the device into ROM mode and use the export feature at the bottom of the page on the I2C Pro screen. You can press the execute button after the export to return the device to normal mode.

    I compared those values with values from "good file - BAT_12" and I'm confused, becouse is a large difference between them.

    I should use settings from "good file - BAT_12" or use original settings from ChemID 2002? What can you reccomend?

  • Those are the correct Ra table values for ChemID 2002. You should use the values from the good pack, if they were updated from the optimization cycle.
