BQ34Z100-G1 Features and Compatibility with BQ34Z100

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ34Z100, BQ34Z100-G1, BQ34Z110, BQSTUDIO

Tom,

I've successfully implemented the BQ34Z100 in a prototype with high discharge currents (you answered some questions for me about a year ago under my old account: http://e2e.ti.com/search?author=179082). I plan on updating my design with the G1 part as it becomes available, but I had a couple of questions as I think through this design change.

The G1 appears to be pin-compatible with the pre-G1 version. Is this new version also binary compatible (so I can use my existing golden SENC files), or will I need to generate a new golden image for the new chip?

Finally, what improvements does this new version offer? I can't pinpoint many differences in the datasheets save for idle and active power consumption.

Thanks,
Ethan Zonca

  • Ethan,

The bq34z100-G1 is the same hardware platform as the bq34z100 and the new firmware can be programmed into the existing bq34z100 and bq34z110 devices. There are no changes to the electrical parameters, but there are improvements to the Impedance Track algorithm. The most notable is the addition of a smoothing filter that will dampen SOC jumps that can occur under transient load conditions. The device will support LI-Ion, LiFePO4, PbA, NiMH and NiCd cell chemistries. The evaluation software has also been updated and it does not support to older senc file format. You can program the Qmax and Ra table values from your previous optimization cycle into the data flash, so you do not have to repeat this process. The device should be released within the next few days.

  • Tom,

Thanks for the quick and helpful reply. Is the G1 firmware available for download? It would be great to be able to flash my existing non-G1 part to do some bench testing and to work on migrating our pack configuration and tables. I'm definitely looking forward to using BQstudio instead of the temperamental UI that the previous version interfaced with!

    Thanks,
    Ethan Zonca

  • Ethan,
We are in the process of adding the -G1 FW to the product folder. Can you send me an email address and I can send you a copy.
    Tom
  • Sure, you can email me at ezonca@sealandaire.com. Thanks again.
  • We have product built with both the BQ34Z100 and the BQ34Z100-G1.  Since these are already deployed in the field, is there a way to determine which version of Ic is in the product, using HDQ from our controlling software?

If not, is there an alternative way to determine which device is used in the product?

  • You can use the Control Subcommands over HDQ mode, so read the FW_VERSION (Command 0x0002) It will return 0006 for the bq34z100 and 0016 for the bq34z100-G1.
  • Thanks Tom, we'll give it a try.
