How to check whether BQ34Z100EVM broken or not?

Hi,

We intend to use the BQ34Z100 for our battery management system which we had been purchased a BQ34Z100EVM & EV2300. I did download Battery Management Studio software and EV2300 USB driver for Windows XP. Both software installed without any questions and connect EVM, EV2300 and Boston 4400 battery as section 2.3. However, BQ34Z100EVM can't be auto detected. So I re-installed and check cable many times, but in vain. Is it possible that I had been short BAT+ and BAT- for a second cause it broken? I had tried to use BQ27541EVM with Battery Management Studio it can auto detect properly.

PS. No matter BQ34Z100EVM or BQ27541EVM did also tried on different computer using Windows XP and Windows 7. Only BQ34Z100EVM can't auto detected.

I would check to see whether the REG25 output is regulating. You can also check to see whether the thermistor is pulsing and whether the device is acknowledging the address word.

Hi ThomasCosby,

I had followed your advise to measure the I2C signal. I couldn't measure any I2C signal from BQ34Z100EVM ( both SCL SDA stay low ), but BQ27541EVM could. Wake BQ34Z100EVM up by applying voltage to BAT+ and BAT-, doesn't it? I'm real confused to what had happened. Is my BQ34Z100EVM broken?

If the bq34z100 is holding the I2C signals low, then the device probably is broken. Did you check the REG25 output?

I just measured REGIN and REG25. Both REGIN and REG25 voltage were 0. If BQ34Z100EVM is dead REG25 can't measure any voltage signal may be reasonable. However, REGIN voltage should equal to battery voltage, right?

REGIN is the power supply to the device, so the external pre-regulator must be damaged. The Q3 and Q8 FETs have probably been damaged. If they are damaged, then you can replace them or remove R39 and R40 and use an external power supply to apply 3.3V to REGIN. There is a pin on the J5 jumper where you can access REGIN. Reference the EVM schematic.
