Starting up bq78z100

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ78Z100, BQSTUDIO

Hello Team,

I'm having troubles starting up a battery pack protection circuit based on bq78z100 so I have a few questions about it. My circuit is very similar to the evaluation module ( bq78z100EVM ) with a 2-series cells setting.

1. Is it mandatory some kind of programming or configuration before using it?

2. Must the bq78z100 detect a voltage at PACK pin to turn on the FETs?

3. What are the conditions to turn on the FETs?

4. Does the switch (S1) have to be included in a definitive circuit?

Thanks in advance,

Jose

  • Hi Jose,
pls watch video in the link below. This will help you come up to speed in using the device.

    in response to your questions:
    1. Is it mandatory some kind of programming or configuration before using it?

it is required to configure data flash for your application specific needs. pls refer to the technical reference manual if you are not clear on any of the df parameters.

    2. Must the bq78z100 detect a voltage at PACK pin to turn on the FETs?
yes it has to detect a voltage on packp to wake up from shut down mode. There is a command which can be sent to toggle the fets on/off as well . See fet_en button on bqstudio

    3. What are the conditions to turn on the FETs?

There are several safety features which allows the charge and discharge fet to turn on / off. however, you can send a command to automatically turn the fets on or off as mentioned in the previous question

    4. Does the switch (S1) have to be included in a definitive circuit?
no s1 is not needed in your actual circuit. It is on the evm to allow waking the gauge up with a battery incase of the unavialbilty o f a charger

    Thanks

  • Thanks a lot, Onyx. I'm going to digest all this information. I will contact you later.
    I appreciate your help
  • Onyx,

I am using exactly the same product (BQ78z100) and I was wondering if it can be programmed using the MSP-EXP430G2 launch pad? Because unfortunately we are students and we do not have the funds to buy the programmer needed for the BQ78z100.

    Thank you,
    -Kenneth

You should be able to program the srec on the gauge using your host. The srec is a standard motorolla format.
    thanks

  • Onyx,

Could you describe the first few commands that should be sent to the device to make it wake up, please?

    Thanks,
    -Kenneth
  • Hi Kenneth
You need to apply a charger voltage to pack + to wake it up from shut down mode.
    thanks
