BQ27542-G1: Minimum battery capacity?

Part Number: BQ27542-G1

TI's selection guide for these parts specifies a minimum battery capacity of 100mAh. My application has a 60mAh battery.

What are the implications of using this part on a smaller capacity battery?

  • The gauge won't work well without modifications if you want to use a 60mAh cell. This is mainly due to current resolution limitations (the gauge uses 1mA as the current resolution internally).

You can increase the sense resistor by a factor of 10 to let the gauge think that your application uses 10x the current.
So in effect the gauge works on a virtual 600mAh cell. All current related parameters have to be scaled accordingly.

This assumes that your system can tolerate the voltage drop over a 10x higher sense resistor.
