BQ40Z50EVM-561: Unable to connect Batterypack

Part Number: BQ40Z50EVM-561
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ40Z50-R1, BQ40Z50, BQSTUDIO, BQ2057C

Hi, Im trying to evaluate the Bq40z50-r1 for my Bachelorthesis. I installed the Studio and the Ev2300. I works fine, i think. But as soon as i connect the Batterys to the EVM. the software stats: "no ack from the device" and the connection between Board and software is lost. When I remove the batterys, the system reconnects to the PC. I can read and Write Data as long as there is no battery attached. any suggestions how i should continue?

  • Are you attaching the cells to J1 and J5 terminal blocks ?

Take a look at the EVM Manual's section 2.3 "EVM Connections" for the proper connection method, www.ti.com/.../sluuav7b.pdf
  • Hi Helge,

Did you press S1 ("WAKE" button) on the bq40z50EVM to startup the bq40z50-R1? The bq40z50-R1 requires a voltage applied across PACK+ and PACK- by a charger > 2.45V to startup after the battery pack is connected.

Please refer to the bq40z50-R1 datasheet, TRM and EVM user's guide to help answer some of the bq40z50-R1 questions you may encounter.

  • Hi, first off thank you for your quick reply. When I first started the EVM, I did it step-by-step as in the Manual suggested. There was no reply by the management software. As soon as I removed the Battery pack, the software did connect to the EVM. My Batterys are Ok, I checked them
  • thank you for your reply. I connected a supply voltage. Otherwise there is no connection to my PC anyway and i pressed the wake button also. Still no ack, when I connect any Battery to the EVM. I did everything as it was provited in the manual: connect cell1 first and shortfuse all open connectors, in my case that is j3 to j5, as i use 2 series cells.
  • Hi!

By default data flash settings configure the bq40z50 for 3-series Li-Ion cells. Try next sequence:

disconnect any battery, apply external power  and launch the BQStudio

Open : View->Data Memory->Setting->DA Configuration and change from CC[1,0] bits fields from 1,0 to 0,1 (for 2 Cells) (see RefMan)

Press "Write All" the button and in Command window press "RESET" for reboot bq40z50 chip..

    From "bq40z50EVM Quick Start Guide":

    Parameter setup

The default data flash settings configure the device for 3-series Li-Ion cells. The user should change

the | Data Flash | Settings | DA Configuration register to set up the number of series cells to match the

physical pack configuration. This provides basic functionality to the setup. Other data flash parameters

should also be updated to fine tune the gauge to the pack. See the bq40z50 TRM for help with setting

    the parameters.

  • Hi thanks for your help. I did what you suggested, still there is no connection, if a Battery is connected. In addition I found another error, or at least I belive it´s faulty. I´m unable to send PF_Clear or BBR_Clear. Maybe there is something wrong in one of the registers?
  • Hi Helge,

Let's clarify somethings. You're connected to the SMBUS port of the EV2300, right? When the battery is removed how is bq40z50-R1 powered? By PACK+ and PACK-? What are the cells voltages measured with a digital multimeter?

Can you provide a picture of your setup?

  • I´ve powered the BQ40z50-R1 with 12V DC over pack+ and pack-. My measured battey voltages are 4.07 V for cell 1 and 4.06 V for Cell 2. I´m useing 2 Protected 18650 3500mAh Batterys by Keeppower.
In another attempt to get something going I used a Charge ciruit powered by a BQ2057C and a single Cell installation. Also no connection as soon as a Battery is detected.
  • I can send a Picture tomorrow, I´m not at the university today
  • I took my the old prototype (3 cells, 2 years ago) and switched to 2 cells. Rewrite CC[1,0] to CC[0,1], make correction to Design Voltage and Voltage Termination..
Pack work is fine - make charge/discharge, and work with bqStudio w/o external power..
see in attach my EVM (accums Li, unprotected)

If your can't clear PF, maybe your bq40z50 in sealed mode.. Or the alert is permanent.. Show screenshot from your bqStudio..

  • Hi Helge,

What is the voltage of the two cells you measure manually with a DMM? That's what the gauge reports. Because you apply 12V at the pack + and - terminals the battery doesn't automatically charge and reflect that voltage. Most likely the CHG and DSG FETs are open. Do you see any PF status reported in the dashboard? Is FET_EN red? It should be. Is DSG and CHG red? Is should be if everything is ok and FET_EN is red. Red means set to 1. Is PRES set to red? If not you're not using the system present feature for removable pack, so you need to set NR bit to 1 in the same DA configuration you set CC[1:0] = 01.
