bq34z100: TI Learning on PbA Batteries

Part Number: BQ34Z100
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO,

Hello,

I started learning (TI_enabled) but then procedure was interrupted - battery power disconnected, bqStudio shut down, etc, I now cannot change/update info or re-calibrate? I also note that the voltage and current do not always read correctly, especially when bq34z100 is shut down; I need to re-calibrate?!

There is option to enable TI, but none to disable; what needs to be done so I can change/update data info?

What is the procedure from this point to start a new learning cycle on a 12V, 100Ahr(10hr)/66.2Ahr(1hr) Battery? I need to see that SOC follows PbA Battery curve ... 100%@12.7V -> 10%@11.31V, 0%@10.5V

Thank you

Clinton,

  • Hi Clinton,

IT should not be enabled until calibration and optimization are complete - IT enable limits some flash updates.

Please set Update Status to 02 to disable IT when creating a golden srec for production.  Unfortunately, after IT has been enabled, it cannot be disabled, however, you may sent a reset 41 to disqualify the DOD point thereby preventing Qmax and the Ra table from updating.

Have you completed an optimization cycle to learn Qmax and Ra for you pack?

More specifically: The Detailed Design Procedure in Section 8.2.2 of the Datasheet (www.ti.com/.../bq34z100-g1.pdf ) lists Steps 1-8. Which step were you on when you enabled IT?

Also, what version of the firmware are you using?

    Sincerely,
    Bryan Kahler

  • Hello Bryan,

    I enabled IT at 8.2.2.1.8 (STEP 8) of bq34z100-g1.pdf.
SLUA334B is for bq20zxx, but because mentioned in bq34z100-g1.pdf I assume it is correct procedure to follow; although on ti forums there are other methods of IT which include monitoring OCVTAKEN (which is not mentioned in SLUA334B). So I am not sure which is proper method to follow.

Data Memory->Gas Gauging->Update Status = 04 and it does not change to 02 when I try?!
I am having read/write problems, and only every now and then does it read/write - only thing left that I know about is updating EV2300 firmware from 3.1c to 3.1m/r; but this requires a second EV2300 unfortunately ... if it will solve intermittent read/write operations. the rare times that read/write works the Update Status is back at 04, did not change to 02?!

    I am using bqStudio 1.3.54.1 & FW_VERSION is 0x0016; from DashBoard: bq34z100G1 0100_0_16.

    Thank you.

    Clinton
  • Hi Clinton,

    Thank you for the update.

What is your ChemID? Please make sure that your flash update ok voltage is set to 1000 mV.

The EV2300 firmware needs to be updated from 3.1C to 3.1 m/r. Unfortunately, 3.1C firmware can cause issues with programming.

The bq34z100-G1 .bqz file that shipped with bqStudio 1.3.54.1 is known to be defective and can also cause issues, especially with voltage calibration. Please make sure to download the updated file from the product page and replace the .bqz

    Please try either/both:
    A) Reinstallation
    1. Fresh install of bqStudio 1.3.76 build 3

    B) Fixing the File for bqStudio 1.3.54.1
    1. Download this specific 16 version of the bqz file (I realize you have downloaded it from the site previously, but lets try with a fresh version) located here: e2e.ti.com/.../2577.0100_5F00_0_5F00_16_2D00_bq34z100G1.bqz
    2. Rename/remove the prexisting bqz file in C:\ti\BatteryManagementStudio\config
    3. Place the freshly download bqz file in C:\ti\BatteryManagementStudio\config

I have sent you a friend request to handle the remaining issues offline. Thanks!
