bq40z50EVM can't get it to work

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ40Z50EVM-561, EV2400, BQSTUDIO

Hello everybody,

I am currently writing my bachelors thesis and have a couple of problems with the Bq40z50EVM-561. I am using the BQ-Studio, but i can't seem to get it to work.

My setup is as follows:

-I got a voltage source, providing 5V.

-I got the Bq40z50EVM-561 with one LI-ion cell connected from 1N to 1P. the orther ports are connected as they should be.

- all of this is connected to the Pc using the EV2400

I already changed the DA config to "0,0" so it accepts the connection with 1 Cell.

I still cant manage to get to load the cell or create a golden file. I still have a hard time to understand all the steps that are necessary to get it to work.

So far I tried to calibrate and than choose the right chemistry, but what do i got go do next? is there an easy way to set up?

I also got problems to use any commands,  because the device seems to be seald.

Thank you for helping me.

Ps: I added an Image of the dashboard so that you can see my current connection

  • Hi Mohamed,
One of our BMS experts has been assigned to your issue and will answer shortly.

    Regards,
    David
  • Hi,

Hopefully I can help you get a golden file created. It seems that you have the EVM and bqStudio talking, so that is a good first step.  Please verify that you have configured all the settings to run the golden file.  If you are doing a single cell, you can reference the SLUA777 (www.ti.com/.../getliterature.tsp cycle procedure&tisearch=Search-EN-Everything) for guidance on the critical items to configure before running the learning cycle.

If you have access to a source-meter, that will simplify your ability to control the charge and discharge of the battery.

  • hey steve,

thank you for your quick response, i still got an issue though. If I understood the guide correctly than I have to use the command "fet enable" to get through the procedure of creating a golden file. Unfortunately I can't use any commands because I am in the sealed mode. If I try to use the command "Unseal" or "Unseal full acess" it won't work, as you can see in the Log panel in the attached picture.

  • From your screen shot, the gauge is not sealed as your SEC1, SEC0 status is 01, which means Full Access (see page 107 of the bq40z50R2TRM, literature number SLUUBK0A for details).

Please confirm that you have the EVM set up for a single cell, and that you have shorted together the unused cell connections so the device is powered by the battery.  This is described in the bq40z50EVM user guide (literature number SLUUAV7B) in Figure 2. Without these connections, you will not be able to enable the CHG or DSG FETs.

Please ensure that your voltage source is current limited properly before enabling charge, or you may damage your cell, the EVM, or the device.

  • hey steve,

thank you oncen again for your quick response. If I am unsealed, than howcome i still can't use any commands? As you can see in the log, i tried different commands, but none of them is working. Any Idea why?

I also added pictures of my settings and the successfull calibration

  • From what you sent, I can not tell if you have the EVM configured correctly for a single cell.  On the registers tab create a log file and send it to me so I can inspect the settings and help troubleshoot your set-up.

    Hey steve,

here is the logging data. Thanks again for your ambitious help

  • Thanks. Can you also send the .gg file for your configuration? On the Data Memory tab, click the Export button at the top and send the file to me.
  • Hey steve,
I can't send you the .gg file because apparently this forum doesn't accept the file ending. Is there a Way around it?
  • data memory1.pdfNevermind, I saved it as a PDF, hope this works for you.

  • Hello,

Sorry for the delay in responding.  I am not able to see the configuration file (saving it to a .pdf and then converting back to a .gg.csv does not work).

I can see from your log file that the EVM and supplies are not set up right, as you have the following:

    CellVolt1 CellVolt2 CellVolt3 CellVolt4 vBAT vPACK
    3513 0 0 0 4200 3512
    3513 0 0 0 4199 3511
    3513 0 0 0 4200 3513
    3512 0 0 0 4201 3511
    3513 0 0 0 4200 3511
    3513 0 0 0 4199

    3512

Your CellVolt1 voltage and vBAT voltage should be similar, and the vPACK voltage should be your charger voltage from the sourcemeter when the CHG FET is disabled.

    It should look like this:

    CellVolt1 CellVolt2 CellVolt3 CellVolt4 vBAT vPACK CellCurr1
    3968 0 0 0 3997 4224 0
    3969 0 0 0 3999 4224 0
    3968 0 0 0 3999 4222 0
    3969 0 0 0 3997 4224 0
    3969 0 0 0 3998 4224 0
    4024 0 0 0 4054 4084 195
    4026 0 0 0 4057 4080 197
    4027 0 0 0 4058 4080 196
    4028 0 0 0 4059 4082 198
    4028 0 0 0 4060 4082 196

During this log, I enabled the CHG FET to start charging at 195mA.  The PACK voltage was current limited by the sourcemeter, so the voltage floated to the battery voltage.

    Please check your set-up again.

  • Just checking in to see if you have been able to get your EVM to work.

  • Hey Steve, sorry for my late reply.

I tried to get the EVM to work, but unfortunately it stopped responding to anything. It had some communication problems before, as it lost connection to the PC every once in a while. We tried to get it to work with different PC's but it's just not responding anymore. We're considering to buy a new one, as the old one was used before hand.

So I guess you can close this thread now.

Anyways, thank you for your ambitious help so far.

  • You can put it in a .zip file.
