BQ34110: Use minimal parts for 3-Cell Series NiCD possible?

Part Number: BQ34110

Hello.

I'm looking at using the bq34110 for use as a gas gauge for a 3-Cell In Series NiCD Pack for general gas gauging. I like the IC but space is tight on the end board. Reading through the datasheet's typ. application circuit it asserts using the collection of FETs for use in multicell systems (Tags B & C) otherwise can be omitted for direct connections in single cell Li-Ion applications. Since my NiCD pack won't exceed 4.2V I figured I could just use it as is.

My only reservation is my charger (a PowerStream PST-3P10-N0508) has a charge voltage of 1.6V/cell (And from inspection with my DMM, I've seen it peak at 5.25V). Thus I'd be pushing the max ratings on the part but it shouldn't be damaged.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks.
