Hi Alex, There should not be any issue using the bq78PL114 in a 12S UPS application. We do not provide a cell balancing status over the SMBus. I hope this helps. Regards, Nancy

since i changed the firmware of the bq78pl114 to s12 (fw 5000), the calibration of the 5th cell (bq76pl102) does not work any more. The out of the box calibration of bq76pl102 is not good enough (100mV offset at 4.0V) to avoid calibration. Is there a solution? Where can i get the old firmware...

The input of the bq78pl114 voltage measurement should not exceed 5V. If the battery pack assembler has to connect the battery to the pcb, does he has to take care for the order he makes the contacts to the cells, for example: most negative first, than contact to first cell, than second cell ... Dear Jim, Thank you for your fast answer. i just took a new pcb into operation. I pushed the 76PL102 calibration into the 78PL114 (not 78PL114) using the "calibration transfer bit" and a calibration/relearn sequence. The result was obvious, the cell 5 voltage is nearly exact. Reading...

    Andreas S Andreas S
Hello Jim, the data-sheet of bq78pl114 specifies the compatibility with Smart Battery System (SBS) Specification 1.1 requirements (page 1, 16) . This data-sheet specifies also the R/W word possibility of the Battery_Mode (page 22). SBS 1.1 specifies the same. I think, there is a deviation between...

  • Forum Post: bq78pl114 writing to BatteryMode() for broadcasting fails

    Andreas S Andreas S
BatteryMode() bit 14 (charger_mode )can not be set successfully via bqwizard. This bit defines, wether the charging voltage and -current is broadcasted to the SMbus or not. If writing to the SBS standard parameter 03, reading gives old value back, no change of parameter. Within specification, this...

The bq78PL114S12 is limited to 3 to 12 series cell operation. Key points to consider. PowerPump: It is not designed to balance beyond the 12th cell or below the first cell. There really is no way to get around this without a product design change. SMBus: The address for the device is fixed. So...

Frequently i can read, it is not needed, to calibrate the voltage of the bq78pl114. I am trying to find a fuel gauge IC for a single cell Li-Ion battery. The communication interface must be SMBus. All I have been able to find is the Bq76PL102. is bq76PL102 a viable candidate, or do we not have a solution at this time? thanks.

Hellow, the data sheet of the bq78pl114 refers always to calibrated devices if terms related to accuracy. So calibration is demanded. Consider the bq78PL114 (1) and bq76PL102 (2). This cobination will fuel gauge an 8 series cell battery. An important consideration is that these devices are rated down to 2.5V/cell.

The comms interface is SMBus only. The bq78PL114 & bq76PL102s can only be stacked to make a battery managment solution for up to 12 cells (in series) . A 16 cell solution will be coming out soon. Please refer to bq76PL536 as an alternate solution for higher cell counts.
