Fusion Digital Power Design stalls while looking for USB Serial Adapter

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCD9248

Hello,

I am having trouble getting Fusion Digital Power Designer to run. I connect the TI USB Interface Adapter to my PC (Win7 Enterprise Service Pack 1 64-bit) using no hubs or docks. It enumerates as a USB Input Device. I start Fusion Digital Power Designer (v. 1.8.372), and it stalls out indefinitely at the step shown below:

Strangley, if I run the Fusion Digital Power Designer (Offline Mode), I can see that it's communicating with the USB Serial Adapter by clicking "File -> USB Adapter Settings". This is what it shows:

Can anyone tell me why the online version stalls out when looking for the USB Interface adapter?

Best,

Brady

  • Brady,

Do you have the USB-To-GPIO Adapter plugged into a device? Which device?

Can you run the UCD3XXX / UCD9XXX Device GUI? If so, what happens when you scan the device in ROM mode, or check for a DEVICE ID?

    Regards,

    Brandon Vonk

  • Brandon,

    Thank you for your response.

The USB-To-GPIO Adapter is plugged into a Xilinx ZC702 board, which contains a UCD9248.

The UCD3XXX / UCD9XXX Device GUI stalls on the same screen. After letting it sit for 30 minutes on this screen, I tried unplugging and replugging the USB connection. I then make it to this screen:

Then, if I try to change any of the Adapter settings (i.e. Bus Speed), the software becomes unresponsive.

As another test, I moved the adapter to another computer which was running the Adapter Server, and I used the Adapter Mode Selector tool to tell my PC to look for it there. The Adapter Server reported that it my PC had connected and that it had found the adapter, but my PC still did not move beyond the "Looking for USB Adapter" screen.

Please let me know what suggestions you have.

    Best,

    Brady

  • Wondering if you were able to figure out the answer to why you couldn't get online mode to work. I'm running into the same problems and we need to get this working for our Xilinx dev board to be reprogrammed.

  • Currently, Fusion Digital Power Design only support USB-To-GPIO Adapter (see the below image). It looks like the adapter you plug in is not USB-to-GPIO. Please verify if you use correct one.

  • Yes that is the same adapter that we are using in attempt to reprogram the KC705

  • Can you confirm the FW version on your adapter?

  • The FW version on the adapter says 49.2.2
  • I'm not sure where this version of the USB-to-GPIO adapter with the 49.2.2 FW originates, possibly another business unit at TI, I will check into it.

I've never had an adapter with this FW version but I assume it is not compatible with the FDPD software.

    Try this:

Plug in the adapter to your computer (instructions based on WIN7 OS), navigate from the Start menu as follows:

Start-->All Programs-->Texas Instruments-->Fusion Digital Power Designer-->Tools-->USB Adapter Firmware Download Tool

Choose the Select USB Adapter Firmware radio button then select any of the FW versions shown.

(the USB-to-GPIO supports a number of different devices but all these FW versions work with the UCD9248 - the only difference you would possibly see is the polarity of the PMBus_CNTRL pin when the adapter is attached to the computer.  This may disable the conversion on the rails if the configuration is set to use the control pin and they have wired it to the controller)  If you need a particular polarity let me know and I can look it up.

    Click Next

After Download has completed, click OK.

You will need to disconnect and reconnect the adapter for it to run the new FW version

  • Works perfectly now, thanks for the help
  • I just confirmed that the BQ2416x EVM software does in fact overwrite the shipping FW in the USB-to-GPIO adapter and that it can be restored to a 10.x.x version.
One thing is required, after launching the USB Adapter Firmware Download Tool it will not find the adapter while scanning, unplug adapter from USB and FW load screen comes up, reconnect adapter to USB and then continue procedure.
