USB-to-GPIO issue

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCD3138

Hi,

I used the USB-to_GPIO Adapter with my UCD3138 EVM, works good. Than I have to evaluate the bq24261 and so I used the same Adapter with this EVM. As I started the Software for the bq24261 I get a message to update the Firmware of the Adapter, ok. After Evaluation I tried to Switch back to my UCD3138 Eval, but now, the Design Fusion Software didnt find my Adapter. I restart the Adapter, the PC, everything, no Chance ..

Dis I Need a Special Adapter with Special Firmware for each eval module?

But the bq24261 Eval still working, so the Adapter didnt fail.

Urgent help needed.

With best regards

Gerhard

  • It appears th bq24261 adapter FW is not compatible with the remainder of the product lines that use the standard FW.

I recreated your experience with the USB-to-GPIO adapter and tried to restore the Fusion required FW version with the Fusion GUI's USB Adapter Fireware Download Tool from the Fusion Tools folder but this did not work because the adapter still needs to be found by the SW before the FW update can be performed.

I have passed this information back to the UCD3K Fusion GUI designer and the bq applications support for this device to see if they can formulate a workaround.

  • .. ok, thanks.

Do you have any idea how Long this investigations can take?

If there is no solution within two days or so, I have to order a new Adapter, Hgrrrr.

  • I expect it may take more than two days to acheive a resolution on this issue.

Best bet would be to go with the two adapters for the short term. I've heard back from the UCD3xxx side of the business but the bq group has not responded and I beleive this would need to be driven from their end.

  • Hi,

    ok, bad News.

So I ordered a Adapter, can you tell me how to do? Just using and NEVER use it with bq24261. Other things to take care?

  • At least for the short term I would mark each adapter for the device it is meant to communicate with.

If you should inadvertently connect the UCD adapter to the bq circuit and run then you will need press the Cancel button when you are prompted for the FW upgrade, otherwise you will be back to where you are today.

Released USB adapter FW versions that I know work with the UCD are 1.1.10, 1.1.11 and 1.1.14, newly purchased adapters should come with the 1.1.14.  It's unlikely you would see either of the other two FW builds but if you should it is alright to upgrade to any one of these versions.    I've been told that the changes between these builds do not affect UCD communication but I like to keep the driver up to date anyways.

Note:  I sometimes switch between versions 1.1.11 and 1.1.14 as they have opposite default states for the PMBus_CNTRL pin which can be handy when working with a system that has this pin also driven from onboard circuitry and you do not want the adapter interfering with the CNTRL pin operation at power-up.  There is an upgrade app in the Tools folder of the Fusion Digital Power Designer SW that lets you swap between these versions (but it doesn't work with the bq FW version).

  • Hi,

ok, will do so. I think this can work. And I hope the issue is solved fur the future.

    Thanks for helping.
