questions of SM72442/72445 MPPT controller

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SM72445, SM72442

I am testing the demo board of SM72445 , and here are few questions:

1). How to disable the PM( panel mode), or prevent it from going into PM at startup?

2). What is the spec of the inductor L1 (PA2965.203NL) in the demo board ?  I can't find it anywhere online.

3). What are the differences between SM72442 and 72445 ?  Besides A/D resolution, seems there are other variations in their configuration too. Not sure if there are more.

  • Hi John,

1)There are a few things you can do depending on what you want to achieve:

First setting A6 to 5V (or whatever your vref+ is) should remove panel mode at startup. See table2 of the SM72445 data sheet.

You can switch the IC to a panel mode operation where it uses the H bridge FETs instead of dedicated FET for panel mode. See table1 of the SM72445 datasheet.

Also if enough current is detected on AIOUT at startup during the ramp-up of the output voltage (before it gets to PM) then the unit will skip panel mode and begin MPPT operation immediately.

    2) it is a 20uH. I believe it is rated around 20A but I need to find the data sheet first. It was a custom made device for the SM3320 junction box integrated MPPT.

    3) The SM72442 and SM72445 are very similar. The only difference I can think of is that the SM72445 has more options of switching frequencies and other config option such as H-bridge panel mode option. Most of the differences are on the A2 and A6 config pin descriptions.

  • Thanks Florent!

Other than SM72442/5, is there newer part you could recommend?

  • Hi John,

SM72445 is the latest offering from TI.

The product by itself is relatively new and differentiated in the market place.
