BQ33100: BQ33100

Part Number: BQ33100
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24640, EV2400

Hi,

We are planning to develop the system to store energy in capacitors and reuse it when required. For this process, I need cell balancing, state of health, state of charge.

I found BQ33100 suitable. However, I have few questions

1. Can we develop a SMBus driver to read the data from BQ33100 from any microcontroller.

2. Can we program BQ33100 without using kit provided by TI.

2. Do we need BQ24640 to used along with BQ33100. Or BQ33100 alone can be used, as this will also do cell balancing+charging.

Please provide the details.

  • Hi Pranesh,

    1. Yes, you can develop a SMBus driver to read/write data from/to the bq33100 with a microcontroller. For more information about using an i2c interface with an smbus device, please read the following app notes:

    www.ti.com/.../sloa132.pdf
    www.ti.com/.../slaa249a.pdf

    2. Yes, the device can be programmed without using the kit provided by TI, and this is often done in production. However, for development (configuring the bq33100 and testing), the kit (EV2300/EV2400, bq33100 EVM and EVSW) is highly recommended.

    3. The bq33100 is a supercapcitor monitor and does not include a charger.

    Sincerely,
    Bryan Kahler
