LMG5200POLEVM-10: How is the 1:5 transformer laid out on the 5200 PoL EVM?

Part Number: LMG5200POLEVM-10

The User Manual of the EVM explains:

The converter topology and transformer turns ratio (5:1) restricts the maximum output voltage to be 1/20th of the input voltage.

In that manual, there are two windings visible in the top and bottom layer.

How is the 5:1 ratio achieved in that design?

  • Hi Jan,

thanks for the interest, that is a very good question.

The planar transformer is build on a 10 layer board, with layers 1,4,5,7,10 dedicated to the secondary side (each one turn in parallel) and the other to the primary side (one turn each in series).

    The stacking goes S PP SS P S PP S (S=secondary P= primary).

Please reference to the picture below.

I hope that this answers your question. If it does, please click the verify answer button.
