AC oring DC input use with UCC28180 and UCC28051

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC28180, UCC28051, UCC28050

We are investing AC input Oring DC240 to 360V is compatible with UCC28180 and UCC28051.

The DC input ripple is about 1V.

The Output voltage is 390V.

The output current is 1.6A for UCC28180 and 0.8A for UCC28051.

We would like to know recommeded DC input cuircuit for above condition.

Please advise if we can use the PFC compatible with DC input and any concern for this.

Best regards,

Hiroaki

  • Hello Tanikoshi-san

The UCC28180 will certainly run off a DC input - I have just tried the EVM off a DC source.
I expect that the UCC28051 would also run from DC but I have not confirmed it.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'recommended DC input circuit', but here are a few thoughts
The fuse will have to be suitably rated for DC operation
You will still have to deal with inrush currents when the PSU is connected to the source.
The bridge rectifier will of course not be needed - you may want to add some protection against reverse polarity input connection - normally the PFC MOSFET will conduct through its body diode - choose the fuse so that the fuse opens before the MOSFET fails.
You can put a large low impedance capacitor at the input to the Boost stage - this will provide a local low impedance path for the switching frequency ripple to flow in and make it easier to design the EMI filter
The low bandwidth required to achieve PFC is not needed and the error amplifier bandwidth can be much wider.

  • Hello Colin-san,

    Thank you for your support.

I suppose that the UCC28180 does not required AC line sensing will run off a DC input, but the UCC28051 datasheet does not mentioned no AC line sensing needed.

So I suppose the UCC28051 does not work well in DC input, some additional parts are needed to operate UCC28051 in DC input.

Could you confirm the UCC28051 run from DC?

  • Hello Tanikoshi-san

Yes - the UCC28051 will run from a DC source - Iin fact an unmodified UCC28050 EVM will run from a from a DC input - ant the UCC28051 is the same device with slightly different turn-on characteristics.
