ISO124: Three port isolation

Part Number: ISO124
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM5000, TPS40210

I would like to design a 3-port isolation amplifier with a rated voltage continuous (ac 60 Hz) of 1500Vac across the following ports: Power input to signal input, Signal input to signal output and Power input to signal output. I have selected ISO124 for signal input to output isolation. From the datasheet i found that it is rated for 1500 Vac @ 60 Hz continuous across the isolation barrier.

Iam in the process of selecting a DC-DC converter which can sustain continuous voltage of 1500 Vac @ 60 Hz between its input to output to meet the power to input and power to output isolation for the 3-port amplifier. I kindly request the members to suggest any DC-DC converter (1Watt or 2Watt) with the above mentioned isolation voltage rating to meet the requirement.

  • Hi Gokulakrishnan,

Since your question is related more to isolated DC-DC, I'll move your post to their forum.
  • Hello Gokulafrishnan,

Thank you for your interest in TI components. For an isolated 1- or 2-Watt converter, a flyback topology generally is the simplest to implement. Can you kindly provide more details about the input and output parameters of the converter that you need? Input and output voltages and currents, single or multiple outputs, transient response needed, etc?

TI has a limited selection of pre-packaged low-power DC-DC converter modules available (see www.ti.com/.../slyt522d.pdf ). I am not sure if they are isolated or not. If none meet your requirements directly, we can search a large database of reference designs for something similar, but we need the parameters to narrow down the possibilities.

    Regards,
    Ulrich
  • Sir / Madam,

The following are the requirements for the DC to DC converter:

    1) Input voltage : 24 VDC (nominal)

    2) Output voltage: +/- 15 VDC (Dual)

    3) Input to output isolation: Galvanic isolation (With a continuous barrier voltage rating of 1500 VAC @ 60 Hz)

    4) Output power: 1 W or 2 W

    With regards

    gokul

  • Hello Gokul,

With the information provided, I ran a search of reference designs available from the TI Designs reference database and selected 2 of them for you to review. Although I didn't find any that matched your requirements exactly, there are several that are similar in power level and topoplogy, including these two in particular:
www.ti.com/.../PMP7932 which delivers +/-12V at ~6W using the LM5000 which has an integrated switching transistor, and
www.ti.com/.../PMP5666 which delivers +/-12V at ~9.6W using a TPS40210 controller with an external MOSFET switch.

In both cases, the voltages and power levels differ from your requirements, however, the circuit topologies can be used as references to modify the designs to achieve your goals. Depending on the how much your 24-V input can vary, it is possible that the transformers turns-ratios need not be changed and only the feedback dividers adjusted. Certainly the power levels are sufficient and several components may be reduced to conform to the 1-2 Watt level, saving some cost.

There are many other design possibilities with other controllers and buck or flybuck topologies, but flyback is the simplest and these two examples are indicative of that design approach.

    Regards,
    Ulrich
